Pamela MacDonald

Pamela was born in NS, has never lived there – the family moved around a lot due to her Dad being in the military! Has made her way all the way across the country and now lives in Victoria, BC and has no plans to go further west! Goes back to NS 3 times / year to visit Mom.

Pamela is Interested in empowering women. She received degree in Sociology from University of Calgary. Then a probation officer (mostly in interior towns in BC) for 30 years and before that was in the military as a commissioned officer (she is a veteran). As a probation officer she worked with a lot of violent men, she started a women’s shelter and a police-based victim assistance program. In the early 90s, after the 1989 Montreal massacre she attended a conference at Banff Springs Hotel to eradicate violence against women, she heard stories from so many women who had suffered abuse. Pam realized how fortunate she was and that she owed it to these women to do more to help. As a probation officer she started doing research on how to work with girls ‘differently’ and created community programs for girls and women who were in trouble with the law. Moved to Victoria and worked at the custody center, worked with community groups and started doing training across the province. The custody center in Victoria closed and Pamela retired early from her work as a probation officer. Pamela holds a medal from the Queen for her innovative work with women and girls.

Pamela is now a rehabilitation consultant working with schoolteachers, helping them return to or stay at work.

“What kind of ancestor am I?” Keeps Pam grounded thinking about her legacy
