Turquoise Chiang

Turquoise was raised by her Chinese father and Hungarian/ Scottish mother, and her Chinese grandparents po po and ye ye. Her childhood and life are largely shaped by Chinese culture. Her mother, born in Yellowknife to a doctor & an artist, has always been very aware and educated about social issues and ingrained in Turquoise and her younger sister the importance of liberal arts and reading.

Both girls were raised to become strong women. Observing the world has made Turquoise very interested in feminism and gender studies. She’s read the work of Dworkin and Butler and is pursuing those interests in classes.

As President of the City of Victoria Youth Council, Turquoise was able to speak on various panels hosted by the University of Victoria’s Centre for Youth and Society on issues like workforce and activism. At King’s College she is studying through literature, exploring philosophy, history, drama, natural and social sciences. She’s interested in women and gender studies, literature, and history, and plans on a psychology degree. She’s really proud of having moved across the country fresh out of High School and having a really amazing first year University experience!

Outside of school and Soroptimist, Turquoise loves to knit, play volleyball, and spend time with friends and family – including her two cats Pierogi & Origami. Her favourite quote is from Virginia Woolf (Between the Acts): “Books are the mirrors of the soul.”
